Shelli Sonstein (pictured), longtime co-host of the "Jim Kerr Rock & Roll Morning Show" on Classic Rock WAXQ (Q104.3) in New York, is mourning the tragic loss of her daughter, Dina Sonstein Berman, who passed away Monday at the age of 38 from an apparent overdose.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Sonstein shared the devastating news and paid tribute to Dina's strength, humor, and compassion - as well as her struggles with chronic illness, addiction, and mental health.
"For most of her life, Dina struggled with Crohn's Disease, followed by addiction and mental health issues," Sonstein wrote. "My daughter's addiction began at the hands of doctors, who not only prescribed opioids, but surgically implanted a pain box in her, giving her daily doses of Dilaudid and more. She shares this story with millions. Dina never gave up the good fight, in every respect. That is, until her last week."
Sonstein emphasized that her daughter's story was one of resilience and light. "My daughter had a smile that lit up a room. She had a wicked sense of humor. In her final years, she worked in the addiction community to help others."
Dina had deep roots in radio. At 17, she shadowed "Elvis Duran and the Morning Show," and interned at Q104.3 while attending Ithaca College. "She fell in love with radio," Sonstein noted. Dina went on to a career in event planning, quickly excelling in a highly competitive field - including organizing a New Year's Eve event at the historic Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles.
She was also part of the LGBTQ+ community and married her partner Kelly Corazzi less than three years ago. "I treasure the times I saw her truly happy," Sonstein wrote.
Dina found joy in her two Shiba Inu dogs, Shay and Roman, and had recently been in treatment at the Caron Center. "She was smiling, happy, and surrounded with support," her mother recalled of their final visit together in August. "I will always treasure those last hours together."
Sonstein concluded her message with a plea to cherish time with loved ones and to seek help for those who are struggling. "ALWAYS tell your loved ones you love them and don't put off seeing them. And for anyone who is struggling, there IS help."
She also provided resources for those in crisis, including:
- 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Dial or text 988 or visit 988lifeline.org
- Trevor Lifeline (LGBTQ): 1-866-488-7386
- Veterans Crisis Line: 1-800-273-8255, press 1 or text 838255
Sonstein has not announced a return date to Q104.3 and asked for privacy during this difficult time. The radio community, colleagues, and listeners across the country have shared condolences and support as she grieves the loss of her beloved daughter.
