WSSR Chicago Flips to ''Classic Pop'' as The 9-6-7

Connoisseur Media Chicago flips WSSR 96.7 to a new format branded as "The 9-6-7: Chicagoland's Classic Pop," while retaining its WSSR call letters. The new format centers on a high-energy, nostalgia-driven playlist featuring CHR hits from the 1990s and 2000s. The station's music mix includes artists such as Backstreet Boys, Mariah Carey, Eminem, No Doubt, Britney Spears, Usher, Beyonce, Alanis Morissette, Dr. Dre and New Radicals.

The move follows what the company describes as success with a similar format in Dayton. "After the success we've had in Dayton with Z93, we decided the next station that makes sense for the brand-new classic pop format is WSSR," said Keith Dakin, SVP of Programming. He added that the format aligns with morning host Eddie V's background, calling it "a match made in heaven."

WSSR, previously branded as Star 96.7, had been a fixture in the Chicago market since 2004, cycling between AC and Hot AC formats, most recently operating as a Hot AC outlet.

Operations Manager Gordon Mays said the new direction is designed to tap into shared listener memories. "We all grew up and cruised these Chicagoland suburbs with this music as the soundtrack. It was everywhere," he said. "It's been so fun building something we know will feel instantly familiar."

Ahead of the launch, the station stunted over the weekend with an "on hold" format, looping elevator-style music and directing listeners to tune in for the official debut.

The existing on-air lineup remains unchanged under the new format, including Eddie V & Friends in mornings, Jillian Bass in middays, Hannah B in afternoon drive and Erik Zachary at night.
