Student Film Highlights Legacy of WKWZ Radio

A Syosset High School senior has produced a feature-length documentary chronicling the history and impact of student-run radio station WKWZ 88.5 FM in Long Island.

Filmmaker and co-station manager Jason Feldman completed "The Subterranean Penthouse: The Story of WKWZ," a project that examines the station's more than 50-year legacy and its role in developing generations of broadcasters and media professionals.

Founded in 1973, WKWZ has served as a training ground for students interested in radio, production, and storytelling. Feldman said the documentary was created to preserve the station's history while early contributors and alumni were still available to share their experiences.

The film includes interviews, archival footage, and reflections from former students, highlighting the station's evolution from a high school outlet into a broader cultural influence within the community. Programming over the years has included music marathons, live events, and student-led productions.

WKWZ alumni include filmmaker Judd Apatow, journalist Linda Kenyon, SiriusXM sports anchor Bob Galerstein, writer-producer Bob Goodman, and ESPN broadcaster Jake Asman, among others who have gone on to careers in media and entertainment.

The documentary has drawn interest from students, faculty, and alumni, serving as both a historical record and a reflection on the station's influence within Syosset and beyond.

The film is now available to view online at subterraneanpenthouse.com.
