Dominican Broadcaster Francis Mendez Dies at 75

Veteran Dominican broadcaster and communicator Francis Mendez, whose career spanned more than five decades and included years at WSKQ-FM (Mega 97.9) in New York, died Tuesday at age 75, according to Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS).

A native of Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic, Mendez built a broadcasting career in both his home country and the United States. He became a familiar voice to New York's Hispanic audience during his years with Mega 97.9.

His career included work with Radio Guarachita in the Dominican Republic and the program "Senor Bolero." Mendez also served as a voice for television networks Univision and Telemundo.

"Francis Mendez was not only an unmistakable voice that defined a golden era in New York broadcasting and La Mega 97.9 FM, but also a mentor and an exceptional human being," said Arturo Sosa, SBS New York Programming Director for Mega 97.9 and Amor 93.1.

"His elegance behind the microphone, his deep respect for the listener, and his commitment to the Latino community leave an indelible mark on our company and the entire industry," Sosa added.

SBS said its executives, air personalities and staff at Mega 97.9 and Amor 93.1 joined Mendez's family, friends and the broadcasting and journalism communities in mourning his death.

Funeral arrangements and commemorative tributes are expected to be announced later.
