Nielsen Report: Radio Reaches 92% of U.S. Adults

Radio continues to reach more American consumers each month than any other measured media platform, according to a new Nielsen report titled "Everyone. Everywhere. See Audio Differently." The report highlights radio's audience reach, advertising effectiveness and the measurement systems used to track listening across broadcast and digital audio.

According to Nielsen's first-half 2026 data, radio reaches 92% of U.S. adults monthly, representing more than 242 million consumers. That compares with 90% for TV-connected devices, 87% for smartphones and 85% for live and time-shifted television.

Radio also maintains substantial reach among younger audiences, reaching 87% of adults ages 18-34 each month. Among Black adults, monthly reach stands at 92%, while Hispanic adults register 93%.

The report emphasizes radio's continued dominance in vehicles, where more than 80% of ad-supported audio listening time goes to AM/FM radio. Nielsen found that 65% of adult radio listening occurs outside the home, with that figure increasing to 73% during weekday drive times.

A May 2026 study conducted by Nielsen and iHeartMedia found that approximately half of recent and prospective vehicle buyers would refuse to purchase a vehicle without AM/FM radio. More than seven in ten respondents said AM/FM should be standard equipment, while a separate analysis ranked radio second only to smartphone integration in its influence on vehicle purchasing decisions.

Nielsen also examined radio's advertising performance. Its Global Compass benchmarks showed radio delivering a weighted return on investment of $2.00 for every advertising dollar spent, second only to social media at $2.22. Radio outperformed television, display advertising, search and connected television in the analysis.

Despite those results, Nielsen noted that marketers ranked radio last among ten advertising channels in perceived effectiveness, highlighting a disconnect between advertiser perceptions and measured performance.

The report also addresses the importance of combining broadcast radio and podcast advertising. Nielsen found that Americans spend nearly four hours daily consuming audio, with radio and podcasts accounting for 82% of ad-supported audio listening time, compared with 16% for streaming music services.

The second half of the report examines Nielsen's audio measurement methodology, including its Portable People Meter (PPM) system in the 48 largest markets and diary-based measurement in more than 200 additional markets and surrounding counties.

Nielsen noted that its January 2025 implementation of a three-minute listening qualifier increased measured average audiences by 24% on average by capturing shorter listening occasions.

The company also emphasized the limitations of relying exclusively on connected-vehicle data, which can identify what a vehicle's audio system is playing but cannot necessarily determine who is listening or how many people are present.

Nielsen said its approach combines large data sets with representative audience panels to measure radio, podcasts and streaming audio. Its Nielsen Nationwide service provides audience measurement for national network radio.

The report concludes that radio's broad reach, particularly among younger audiences and in vehicles, underscores the importance of comprehensive measurement as advertisers increasingly distribute spending across traditional and digital media platforms.
