Tony Mercurio Exits ESPN 94.1/Norfolk

After an almost 26-year run, ESPN Radio 94.1/Norfolk's Tony Mercurio, whose afternoon talk show has dominated local sports radio, is exiting the station. His last show is slated for Thursday May 24. Mercurio began the show in 1986 and claims that it was the first local radio sports talk show in the state of Virginia. He was first with WGH-AM The Score 1310, which then became ESPN Radio 1310 before transitioning to FM with the format.

Max Media VP Dave Paulus said in a release, "While a two-week 'goodbye' is unusual in radio these days, there's no one who deserves it more than Tony. This gives the Hampton Roads sports community an opportunity to thank him for his unwavering support of the local, collegiate and national athletics in this area. There is no one in the history of the medium in this area who has meant more to sports than he."

While making the announcement during his Monday broadcast, Mercurio said he's still ironing out the terms of his departure, but he anticipated that he would still have the option of continuing to do play-by-play work for the Norfolk Tides and for Old Dominion University.
