One of the longest and most successful careers in the history of Austin radio will enter a new phase as Newsradio KLBJ'S Sergeant Sam Cox announces his retirement from Austin's Morning News with Mark, Ed and Sgt. Sam. After 28 years of ratings success, Sgt. Sam has decided to slow down and devote more time to his family and church. Sgt. Sam combined his 31 years of experience with the Austin police along with his unique humor and insight to become one of the most compelling talk radio personalities in America.
Sgt. Sam's high-profile career of public service began in 1964 with the Austin Police Department where he later became the President of the Austin Police Association for 3 years. Sam retired from the APD after 31 years and joined TXDOT in 1996 where he helped create the Courtesy Patrol for stranded motorists. He also played a key role in creating the 911 Combined Law Enforcement Center now serving the Austin area.
Emmis Austin Radio Market Manager Scott Gillmore commented on Sgt. Sam's impact, noting "For 28 years, Austinites have known they can wake up and drive to work getting heartfelt and no-punches-pulled analysis and commentary from the perspective of a man who has served this community with honor. We'll miss him on our airwaves, but we wish Sam Cox the best and we have no doubts that his service to our community will continue."
Sgt. Sam's last day on the air will be Friday July 31st from 5:30-10 a.m.
