WWKX/Providence Flips to Classic Rock as ''106.3 The Wolf''

Rhythmic CHR WWKX-FM in Providence flips to Classic Rock, rebranding as "106.3 The Wolf." This change took effect on Saturday, November 2. The station, licensed to Woonsocket since 1990 and formerly known as "Hot 106.3," had been known for its Rhythmic, Hip-Hop and R&B tunes but now promises a revival of "real Classic Rock" for Southern New England.

The shift to Classic Rock was teased with special programming, beginning with all-Halloween music on October 31 and continuing with all Grateful Dead music on November 1, in a stunt dubbed "The Day of the Dead."

Adding to the regional flavor, 106.3 The Wolf joins sister WMOS-FM (102.3 The Wolf) in New London, CT. While both stations will share music, personalities, and features, they will maintain separate commercial breaks, local service elements and promotions tailored to each market.

Concurrent with these changes, Doug MacGunnigle, formerly the Program Director for Providence Talk and Sports, has been promoted to Regional Program Director for News/Talk and Classic Rock across Southern New England. He will oversee programming for both The Wolf stations, NewsTalk 630 AM/99.7 FM WPRO, Sports Talk 790AM The Score in Providence and NewsTalk 980 WXLM in New London.

Mike English, a veteran of WMOS-FM's morning drive, will extend his presence to WWKX-FM, featuring weekdays from 6-10am. The stations also look forward to introducing more well-known local air personalities soon. Both stations will host "Steve Gorman Rocks!" a live nighttime show by Black Crowes co-founder Steve Gorman, and "Flashback," a retrospective radio program by MTV legend Matt Pinfield. Sundays will feature "Sammy Hagar's Top Rock Countdown," showcasing various thematic collections by the legendary Red Rocker.

Cumulus/Providence-New London Regional Vice President Holly Paras expressed her enthusiasm for the revamped station lineup, noting, "The signals of 102.3 and 106.3 complement each other wonderfully. It is thrilling to bring true Classic Rock back to Southern New England with the launch of 106.3 The Wolf in Providence."

MacGunnigle added, "We're excited to add Classic Rock to our portfolio of stations in Providence. I'm grateful for the opportunity and the challenge of bringing a different take on Classic Rock to Rhode Island and want to thank my colleagues at Cumulus Programming for their support."
