The Nebraska Broadcasters Association (NBA) has announced the induction of five distinguished figures into its Hall of Fame. The ceremony, set to take place on August 12 during the NBA Annual Convention in La Vista, will honor Dennis & Kathi Brown, Dale Johnson, Mike McKnight and Dave Wingert, bringing the total number of inductees to 123 since the Hall of Fame's inception in 1972.
Dennis and Kathi Brown, the first husband-wife duo to be honored as owner/operators, began their radio journey in Colorado before purchasing Chadron's KCSR-AM in 1991, preventing the station's closure. Their leadership expanded to include KBPY-FM in 2011, with a focus on community engagement and local business support. Dennis has also served as a three-time Chairman of the NBA Board of Directors and is noted for his advocacy for radio broadcasting in Washington, DC.
Dale Johnson's 51-year tenure in Nebraska radio has made him a respected voice in Lincoln and beyond. Starting in smaller cities like Holdrege and Kearney, Johnson eventually became the news director at KFOR in Lincoln for 38 years. Currently, he contributes as a morning host and reporter for Nebraska Public Media. His career highlights include exclusive journalistic opportunities, such as accompanying Governor Dave Heineman on a trade mission to Cuba in 2005.
Investigative reporter Mike McKnight, who began his career at Omaha's WOWT TV in 1977, is recognized for his dedication to uncovering truth and accountability. McKnight has taken on a range of investigative challenges over his career, earning numerous accolades including regional Edward R. Murrow Awards. His commitment extends to mentoring journalism students at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL).
Completing the list of inductees is Dave Wingert, whose six-decade-long broadcasting career has made him a familiar voice, especially in Omaha. Known for his personality and community involvement, Wingert's radio journey includes a significant stint in national syndication and local impact through charity work. He continues to connect with audiences as the morning show host on KOBM-FM's "Boomer Radio."
