WTOP/Washington Wins 5 Chesapeake AP Awards

WTOP-FM in Washington, DC earned top honors at this year's Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association (CAPBA) Awards, taking home five first place recognitions, including the prestigious Best in Show award for its coverage of the Key Bridge collapse.

Among the wins, WTOP.com was named Outstanding Website, highlighting the station's strength in digital journalism alongside its broadcast efforts. The Best in Show award came as part of WTOP's first-place finish in Outstanding Spot News Reporting for its breaking coverage of the Key Bridge disaster.

"Our goal every day is to serve those who live in this region by delivering to them the stories that impact their lives," said Julie Ziegler, WTOP's Director of News and Programming. "The newsroom pushes hard to produce content for our audio, web and social platforms that informs and engages our audience. It is an honor to be recognized for this work."

WTOP's full list of first-place wins at the 2025 CAPBA Awards includes:

  • Outstanding Spot News Reporting & Best in Show - "Key Bridge Collapse"
  • Outstanding Website - WTOP.com
  • Best Reporter - Matt Kaufax
  • Outstanding Light Feature - Matt Kaufax, "Mullet Madness"

The awards were presented at a ceremony held over the weekend. CAPBA is made up of radio and television journalists across the Chesapeake region and honors excellence in broadcast journalism annually.
