Detroit radio is mourning the loss of longtime WWJ Newsradio 950 reporter and anchor Mike Campbell, who died on Sunday, June 8, at the age of 65. The station announced his death Monday morning, describing him as a "fearless and excellent reporter" whose voice became a trusted presence across metro Detroit for nearly three decades. No cause of death was disclosed, and funeral arrangements are pending.

Campbell's career at WWJ spanned almost 30 years, where he served as a weekday reporter and Saturday morning news anchor. Colleagues remembered him for his dedication, compassion, and signature storytelling style that connected deeply with both sources and listeners.

Campbell's commitment to his work extended far beyond the microphone. In 2019, while covering the search for a missing 89-year-old woman with dementia in Shelby Township, Campbell spotted her himself, kept her warm in his WWJ news vehicle, and stayed with her until help arrived. His colleague at the time, Roberta Jasina, called him a "hero," adding, "Give that Mike Campbell a badge!"

Throughout his career, Campbell became known not only for chasing down breaking news, but for doing so with integrity and heart. He once helped police track down a man suspected of looting a fire-damaged strip mall in Warren and was frequently praised by public officials for his fair and thoughtful reporting.

"Mike was truly one of a kind," the Oakland County Road Commission posted on social media. "We always appreciated his visits and the honest, thoughtful way he covered the RCOC. He was a solid journalist who reported the facts with integrity."

Audacy, which owns WWJ, called him a "trusted voice" and a friend to many. "We are truly heartbroken by this loss and extend our condolences to his family and friends," a spokesperson said.

Campbell is survived by his wife, Terri, and their children. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Terri wrote, "I am so lucky to have had someone who loved me and our family so much. I am praying that it is his love that will get us all through this."
