BBC Studios, iHeartPodcasts Launch New True-Crime Series

BBC Studios and iHeartPodcasts have teamed up for the first time to co-produce Hands Tied, a new original true-crime podcast series that delves into a shocking murder and the relentless pursuit of justice that followed. The eight-episode series, hosted by journalist Maggie Robinson Katz, premieres globally on Wednesday, August 6, with new episodes released weekly on iHeartRadio and all major podcast platforms.

Hands Tied centers on the story of Lizz Melgar Rose, who found herself thrust into a real-life crime after years of following true-crime stories. In 2012, Lizz's parents were discovered in their Houston home under horrifying circumstances-her mother, Sandy Melgar, was found bound and locked in a closet, while her father, Jim Melgar, had been murdered. What followed was a complex investigation, a dramatic trial, and a conviction that Lizz has never accepted.

Determined to find the truth, Lizz has spent more than a decade challenging the official narrative, convinced that her mother is innocent and the justice system got it wrong. Through intimate interviews, courtroom drama, and behind-the-scenes access, host Maggie Robinson Katz unpacks the twists and unanswered questions surrounding the case.

"Though Hands Tied is an examination into the shocking murder of Jim Melgar, my hope is that it transcends the typical true crime tropes," said Katz. "The story of a daughter and her tireless quest for answers and justice is what makes this podcast truly compelling."

Rich Knight, Director of Audio at BBC Studios said, "At the heart of this extraordinary series is a violent crime and a search for answers. I hope listeners will be as moved by Lizz's fortitude as we were."

Will Pearson, President of iHeartPodcasts, added, "Listeners everywhere will instantly become invested in Lizz's search for answers and feel her frustration as she comes up against a system she believes has failed her and her family."

The series includes eight episodes plus two bonus episodes. It is produced by Maggie Latham and executive produced by Joe Kent for BBC Studios and Cristina Everett for iHeartPodcasts.
