WHMI in Lowell, MI is deepening its commitment to local journalism with the debut of Meet the People, a new community-centered program designed to connect Livingston County residents with the decisionmakers shaping their daily lives.
Hosted by Brighton native and communications executive Matthew Hutchison, Meet the People will feature round-table discussions with local leaders, elected officials, and influencers. Taped in front of a live studio audience, the series aims to foster dialogue around the most pressing issues in the region.
The inaugural episode will be recorded Wednesday, September 17 at Ciao Amici's restaurant in Brighton, and will focus on how Livingston County agencies are working together to keep roads safe. Panelists for the first episode include:
- Lt. Rene Gonzalez, Public Information Officer, Michigan State Police First District Headquarters
- Chief Bonnie Unruh, South Lyon's first female police chief
- Chief Brent Pirochta, Brighton Police Department
"Meet the People fills a critical gap in how our community connects with its leaders," said WHMI General Manager Rich Renko. "We're creating a space for genuine and constructive dialogue about the issues that affect Livingston County residents - from local-government decisions to state-level policies - and helping pave the way for real results that benefit everyone."
Renko added that the program builds on WHMI's longstanding investment in local news and public service, offering a "fresh approach" to how communities engage with journalism.
Episodes of Meet the People will be made available at whmi.com , included in WHMI newscasts, and posted to the station's Facebook page to encourage continued public interaction and feedback.
