Some five years after former NY Attorney General Eliot Spitzer went after radio groups and labels over payola, Spanish Broadcasting System is about to launch a legal pay-for-play program. According to a report from ABC News, monthly Rotating inFormercial-type packages are available to record companies.
These pay-for-play inFormercials could start airing by the end of October and rates are based on the number of plays to air each month. The packages can be purchased for any artist, both established or new artists and will air on stations between 11pm and 6am weekdays and 11pm to 10am on weekends. As required by law, each song will be preceded by an announcement identifying its payed status as well as the artist, the song title and the presenting sponsor.
So far, the number of packages available for November are two thirds sold old, says SBS Director of New Business Development Manny Mora.
