FCC Approves WGBH Purchase of WCRB/Boston
The FCC has approved public service broadcaster WGBH's purchase of 27kw Classical WCRB-FM (99.5)/Boston from Nassau Broadcasting Partners. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the price tag is a reported $14 million. When completed, WGBH plans to convert its WGBH-FM (89.7) radio outlet to an News/Talk format. It currently airs a mix of National Public Radio syndicated programs, classical music, and jazz shows.
"An opportunity like this comes along once in a lifetime. The acquisition of WCRB by WGBH signals a new era for the Boston broadcast landscape, and for our city's renowned classical music tradition," said WGBH board Chair Amos Hostetter. "WGBH's depth of experience, demonstrated leadership in radio, and commitment to excellence will bring a new level of service to this market."
WCRB, one of the country's few remaining 24/7 commercial Classical stations, ranks 16th overall in the Boston metro. (11-13-09)
