Former talk radio host Michael "Mike" Murphy has filed a class-action suit against CBS Radio/Chicago, on behalf of the employees working there since 2002 reports Crain's. The suit was filed May 28 in a Cook County court over what Murphy alleges are illegal terms in the company's employment contracts. He claims that the geographic restrictions put on an ex-employee are prohibited by Illinois law.
Murphy previously worked at Sports WSCR-AM (The Score)/Chicago until last summer. His non-compete deal ended in May. According to an excerpt of his contract (included in the lawsuit), Murphy was prohibited at working at any outlet within 50 miles of the station, unless he first offered his services under similar terms to the CBS station.
The lawsuit didn't specify damages and could possibly extend to employees at other stations. "If people are in a similar situation, I would be willing to help them out, because situations like this are a flagrant disregard for Illinois law," Murphy said.
