Nielsen Reveals More MLB Opening Day Stats
RADIO ONLINE | Friday, April 11, 2014 |
In honor of the start of the Major League Baseball season this year, Nielsen compiled a multimedia box score featuring stats from four of the 13 opening day games from Monday, March 31 to illustrate how baseball fans engaged with the action in a variety of ways. 1.1 million audio listeners along with another 1.1 million TV households were tuned in across the eight local markets of the participating teams.
A national audience of Twitter users -- including 3.8 million people who saw more than 140,000 Tweets sent about the Chicago Cubs @ Pittsburgh Pirates game alone -- and it's easy to see how opening day has become a powerful draw across screens, mediums and platforms.
Nielsen found that on opening day, 270,700 hometown Cincinnati Red's fans tuned into their radio during their 4pm game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Over 145,000 people tweeted during the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates game. The Boston Red Sox versus the Baltimore Orioles game generated a local TV household rating of 12.3 in Baltimore and 10.1 in Boston.
