MediaCo Holding has taken significant steps in its expansion efforts by finalizing the acquisition of Estrella Media's network, content, digital and commercial operations. This move follows an initial $120 million transaction earlier in April 2024, granting MediaCo operational control. As part of their broader strategy, MediaCo is now exercising its option to also acquire Estrella's broadcast assets, as stated in a recent FCC filing.
The deal encompasses 12 radio stations and 10 television properties, which include both full-power and low-power TV stations. This acquisition marks a substantial addition to MediaCo's portfolio, which already features notable New York FM stations WBLS and WQHT (Hot 97), along with two digital Hispanic stations and the nationally syndicated Don Cheto Radio Network.
The radio outlets transitioning to MediaCo control include Regional Mexican and Spanish CHR formats across markets such as Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas and Riverside-San Bernardino. Notable stations include Los Angeles' KBUA, KEBN & KBUE (Que Buena 94.3/105.5) and 1480 KVNR, along with Houston's KTJM & KNTE (La Raza 98.5/101.7) and KQQK (El Norte 107.9).
The acquisition extends to television stations in significant markets including Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami, among others, solidifying MediaCo's presence in both radio and TV broadcasting.
The expansion is led by Albert Rodriguez, former President and COO of Spanish Broadcasting System, now acting as MediaCo's interim CEO and President. The completion of this deal remains subject to FCC approval.
