The radio waves of South Florida are quieter Monday as the community mourned the passing of "Jammin" Johnny Caride, a towering figure in Hispanic radio broadcasting whose personality and musical genius left an indelible mark on the industry. Johnny Caride, whose full name was John Charles Caride, passed away after a prolific 36-year career.

Born in Miami to Cuban parents, Caride's journey into radio began in 1986 at Ritmo 98FM as a DJ Mixer, where his live mixes soon captured the hearts of listeners across the region. His presence led him to Super Q 107.5FM, where he and his co-host "Mike in the Night" became a top-rated duo.

One of the pivotal moments of his career came in 1995 at Power 96FM, where Caride, in collaboration with his program director, was instrumental in introducing the "Macarena" to U.S. audiences-a decision that sparked a nationwide dance craze. This initiative played a key role in launching the Bayside Boys' famous English remix, which turned the song into a cultural phenomenon.

In 2003, Caride joined Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) at WXDJ-FM, known as El Zol 95.7 FM and now El Zol 106.7 FM. His leadership as Program Director helped solidify the station's success, where he also served as Promotions Director, becoming a pillar of the station's community engagement efforts.

Beyond the studio, Johnny was deeply involved in his community, DJing at weddings, quinceañeras, and other events through his company, The Party Players Inc., founded in 1993. He also held a degree in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing from Miami Dade College, showcasing his deep roots and commitment to his hometown.

Caride was renowned for his support of various music genres and emerging artists, playing a crucial role in popularizing reggaeton in the U.S. by promoting stars like Daddy Yankee and Ivy Queen early in their careers. He celebrated the evolution of Latin music, welcoming new talents like Karol G and J Balvin to the airwaves.

The team at El Zol 106.7FM, the broader SBS family, and fans across South Florida are expressing their sorrow and celebrating the legacy of a man who was much more than a radio personality.
