After days of stunting, KRAO, previously known as Hot AC "MyRadio 102-5" in Colfax, WA, has unveiled a new Classic Hits format as "102.5 KRPL." The station, which had been playing "Whipped Cream" by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass on loop, revealed its format flip on January 6 at 7am, ending days of speculation among its listeners.
The switch to Classic Hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s marks the return of the "KRPL" brand to the Colfax-Moscow-Pullman airwaves for the first time since 2011. That year, KRPL-AM transitioned from Oldies to a Sports format under the banner "1400 - The Palouse's ESPN."
In a nod to local broadcasting history, Steve Shannon, a veteran of Inland Northwest radio since the late 1970s, returns to the station. Shannon, who recently retired, is remembered for his tenure at KRPL and a five-year stint at KJR-FM in Seattle. Matt Mony, known for his roles at CHR Z90 in San Diego and Y101 in Jackson, will both consult the station and take over morning show duties.
"102.5 KRPL" is not just reviving old hits but also launching a significant community outreach program titled "3 Months to Thrive in Downtown Pullman." This initiative will provide free advertising to local businesses in downtown Pullman, many of which have struggled due to prolonged construction activities. The station aims to bolster these businesses by encouraging local shopping and community engagement.
"Driving passion for radio and supporting our local businesses are intertwined in our mission," said Matt Mony. Inland Northwest Broadcasting Sales Manager Jon Carson added, "Reintroducing KRPL with classic hits completes a vital part of our local media landscape, benefiting both listeners and advertisers."
With its rich history dating back to 1947, KRPL has been a staple in the region, undergoing several transformations from full-service radio to Top 40 and then Oldies. Notable alumni of KRPL include Larry Lujack, Marilyn Denis, and Beau Roberts.
