Podcast Exposes Southern Gothic Tale of Abuse in Season 6

The popular true crime podcast "Nobody Should Believe Me," hosted by Andrea Dunlop, returns June 19 with a sixth season that delves into a haunting, decades-long saga of abuse, deception, and systemic failure.

This season centers on the McDaniel family, whose story unfolds like a real-life Southern Gothic tragedy, with allegations of Munchausen by Proxy abuse spanning generations. At the heart of the story is Lisa McDaniel, who for more than a decade served as director of patient advocacy at the Guthy Jackson Foundation, a prominent nonprofit focused on the rare disease NMO (Neuromyelitis Optica). McDaniel claimed her son Collin suffered from the condition, building a public image of a devoted mother turned advocate.

But behind the scenes, a darker reality was taking shape.

As revealed in the new season, McDaniel had a concealed history, including a felony conviction for poisoning and suffocating her infant daughter-details that remained hidden for years as she continued to work with vulnerable families and children. It wasn't until her adult daughter, Mishelle Roberts, courageously came forward that the truth began to unravel.

Through interviews and investigative reporting, Dunlop examines how McDaniel was able to manipulate systems and evade scrutiny, raising disturbing questions about healthcare oversight, legal accountability, and the rare disease community's vulnerability to exploitation.

Season six continues the podcast's mission of exploring institutional blind spots and the devastating consequences of unchecked abuse. Dunlop also issues a stark warning about the infiltration of rare disease advocacy groups by abusers, a danger she says is more common than many realize.

"This season is a call to action," said Dunlop. "Mishelle's bravery in speaking out will help others recognize the signs of this often-hidden form of abuse and understand just how much is at stake."

New episodes of Nobody Should Believe Me will be released weekly beginning June 19.
