After a quarter century on the air, Bert Weiss will retire from The Bert Show, with the nationally syndicated morning program airing its final broadcast on Friday, October 24. Launched in 2001, The Bert Show grew from a local Atlanta program into a syndicated morning franchise, heard in more than two dozen markets and downloaded millions of times each month as a podcast.
Weiss became one of radio's most familiar voices, from putting Justin Bieber on the air for the first time to conducting headline-making interviews, including the revelation from Usher that a conversation on the show inspired his Confessions album. Beyond the studio, Weiss worked to foster empathy and cultural connection through open conversation.
Weiss' impact extends far beyond broadcasting. Through his nonprofit Bert's Big Adventure, he has given hundreds of children with chronic and terminal illnesses -- and their families -- all-expenses-paid trips to Walt Disney World. Following his retirement, he will continue to lead the organization.
"For 25 years, listeners have allowed me to be part of their mornings, their commutes and their lives - and that is the greatest gift of my career," said Weiss. "It's almost unheard of in radio for an audience to stay with a show this long, and I'll never take that loyalty for granted."
Brian Philips, Chief Content Officer for Cumulus Media, called Weiss "the obsessive architect of humor, truthfulness and humanitarianism," adding: "The Bert Show Era is a historic chapter in Atlanta - and American - radio."
Weiss' career has been recognized with induction into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame, three National Radio Hall of Fame nominations, honors from the Friends of Georgia Radio Hall of Fame, and numerous "Best of Atlanta" awards.
In addition to his nonprofit work, Weiss will remain active with Pionaire, the podcast consultancy he co-founded, and plans to spend more time traveling, preparing for marriage, and exploring life beyond the microphone.
