WNYC-AM & FM/New York and Gothamist have appointed veteran journalist Robert Barba as Accountability Editor, overseeing state issues and politics coverage. Barba, who has served on WNYC's day-of team, is recognized for his strong news judgment and sharp editing.

In his new role, he will lead Albany-based reporters Jimmy Vielkind and Jon Campbell as they cover the upcoming New York gubernatorial race and continue work on the New York Public News Network (NYPNN) collaboration among public stations across the state. He will also continue editing reporter Rosemary Misdary's coverage of climate and environmental policy.

Before joining WNYC and Gothamist, Barba spent seven years at The Wall Street Journal, where he helped guide coverage of major national stories including the Columbia University protests, the New Year's Day terrorist attack in New Orleans, and the 2022 Pulitzer Prize finalist report on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. His earlier career includes reporting roles at Bankrate and American Banker, covering the banking and fintech sectors.

Barba currently serves as vice president of the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing and is a lifetime member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. A graduate of the University of Colorado Boulder, he begins his new position next week.
