NAB Webinar to Address New FCC EAS Cyber Rules

The National Association of Broadcasters and National Alliance of State Broadcasters Associations will host a free webinar September 1 to help broadcasters prepare for new FCC cybersecurity requirements covering Emergency Alert System equipment.

The FCC rules take effect September 29 and require broadcasters to implement specific safeguards designed to protect EAS equipment and systems from cyberattacks.

Among the requirements are 15-character passwords, firewalls, network segmentation and prompt installation of security patches and software updates. NAB and NASBA say implementing the safeguards could prove complex and potentially costly for some stations.

The webinar, scheduled for September 1 at 12pm ET, will provide practical guidance for station owners, general managers, engineers and IT professionals ahead of the compliance deadline.

Panelists will include KAMU-TV and KAMU-FM Associate Director of Engineering Wayne Pecena; Digital Alert Systems Vice President of Global and Government Affairs Edward Czarnecki, Ph.D.; and Sage Alerting Systems President Harold Price.

Indiana Broadcasters Association Executive Director Dave Arland and New York State Broadcasters Association President David Donovan will moderate the session.

The webinar comes four weeks ahead of the September 29 deadline, when broadcasters will be required to have the FCC's new EAS cybersecurity protections in place. Register here.
