Skyview Networks is paying tribute to Al McCoy, the legendary Phoenix Suns radio play-by-play announcer, following his death at age 91. McCoy, the NBA's longest-tenured team broadcaster, was a prominent figure in sports media and played a key role in Skyview Networks' early years. His contributions extended beyond the microphone, as he was a close friend to Skyview's executive team and played a pivotal role in the company's partnership with the Suns.
Skyview Networks Founder and Executive Chairman Ken Thiele said, "Al was a gem of a gentleman, a special person, and the best of the best with his craft. His broadcast style made the Phoenix Suns a must-listen for generations of fans. Al will be sorely missed, and I am grateful for the friendship I had with him through the years."
Skyview Networks President of Network Partnerships and Chief Revenue Officer Jeanne-Marie Condo praised McCoy's influence both personally and professionally: "Al McCoy was kind and genuine in every sense. It was an honor to work with him and the Phoenix Suns. His respect across the NBA helped Skyview grow in the industry, and we owe him a great deal of gratitude. Al stood out as an Arizona fan-favorite with his iconic 'Shazam!' call. His warmth and professionalism will be dearly missed, but his legacy will continue."
McCoy's career as "The Voice of the Suns" spanned 51 years, earning him numerous accolades. He was the first play-by-play announcer to be inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. McCoy also received the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007, and in 2017, he became the 15th person inducted into the Suns Ring of Honor.
