Milwaukee has lost a local hero and a national treasure in Bob Uecker, who has died at the age of 90. Known affectionately as "Mr. Baseball," Uecker's voice was synonymous with Milwaukee Brewers baseball, a post he held steadfastly since 1971.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, Uecker's journey in baseball began long before he became a broadcasting icon. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954, where he continued to play baseball at Fort Leonard Wood and Fort Belvoir. His professional playing career kicked off in 1956 with the Milwaukee Braves, and he eventually played for major teams including the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, and Atlanta Braves, retiring from professional play in 1967. Notably, he was part of the Cardinals' 1964 World Series-winning team.
Following his playing days, Uecker transitioned to broadcasting, beginning his career in Atlanta before returning to Milwaukee. Over 54 seasons, his witty and knowledgeable commentary won him the affection of fans and peers alike. In addition to his local work, Uecker's voice graced national broadcasts for NBC and ABC during several World Series and League Championship games.
Uecker's contributions to sports media did not go unrecognized; he was a five-time recipient of the Wisconsin Sportscaster of the Year award and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011.
In tribute to his remarkable life and career, Benztown Audio has released a special audio tribute to Bob Uecker, crafted by consultant Mike McVay and produced by Royce Stevenson, with Darren Silva lending his voice. Fans and admirers can listen to the tribute by visiting Benztown's SoundCloud page.
