U.S. Senate Shows Overwhelming Support for AM Radio Bill

In a significant bipartisan move, a filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate has rallied behind the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, a piece of legislation aimed at ensuring AM radio remains a standard feature in all new vehicles. With 60 senators endorsing the bill, along with 129 representatives in the House, the act has garnered substantial legislative support across party lines.

The bill, sponsored by Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ed Markey (D-MA), proposes to mandate the inclusion of AM radio in all newly manufactured vehicles, citing its critical role in delivering emergency alerts and maintaining connections with local news, sports, and diverse programming. This move comes amid concerns that some automakers are phasing out AM radio from new models, particularly electric vehicles, which could jeopardize public safety during emergencies.

"The strong bipartisan and bicameral backing of this legislation underscores the essential role AM radio plays not just in emergency situations but as a staple of American life," stated Curtis LeGeyt, President and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB). "From natural disasters to daily commutes, AM radio is a trusted voice for millions across the country."

The Senate's swift action, including a voice vote by the Senate Commerce Committee, reflects a broad acknowledgment of AM radio's importance, especially in rural areas and for communities that rely on it for timely and localized information. The House version of the bill, championed by Representatives Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ), also highlights the widespread recognition of AM radio's value.

Moreover, the legislation has received endorsements from over 125 organizations, including the National Emergency Management Association, American Farm Bureau Federation, and AARP, which further illustrates the widespread support for maintaining AM radio access in vehicles.
