Tenderfoot TV and iHeartPodcasts have unveiled Wisecrack, a new six-part limited series that fuses stand-up comedy with true crime storytelling. The series debuts September 2 with episodes released weekly on iHeartRadio and all major podcast platforms. Subscribers to Tenderfoot+ will be able to binge the entire season ad-free on launch day.
At the heart of Wisecrack is comedian Edd Hedges, whose stage act unexpectedly transforms into a harrowing true story about the deadliest night in his small English village. On July 22, 2015, Hedges returned home for a charity performance, only to find the evening descending into terror when a murderer began claiming lives hours after his set. The ordeal became personal when the killer came to his doorstep.
Through a mix of self-deprecating humor and vivid storytelling, Hedges revisits the trauma of that night while painting a portrait of the people and places that shaped him. His material-ranging from tales about his father with eight fingers to his mother's accidental entanglement with meth dealing-threads through the series as both comic relief and a narrative device.
The project originated after Emmy-nominated crime producer Jodi Tovay saw Hedges' act at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. "The moment I heard his set, it stopped me in my tracks," said Tovay, who serves as host and producer. "My curiosity took over and I left vacation early and got to work, knowing that everyone needed to hear this immediately."
The investigation spans from Hedges' English village to the courtroom and prison, before circling back to the stage where his story began. "I tried to deal with the trauma of that night through comedy, but I wasn't willing to fully drop my guard," said Hedges. "This podcast faces it all, head-on."
Donald Albright, co-founder and CEO of Tenderfoot TV, called the series unlike anything podcast audiences have heard before. "When you think you have heard every type of true crime story, Wisecrack proves you haven't. Comedy and crime are a proven recipe for success, but Wisecrack uses the art of stand-up comedy as a device to tell a narrative story, where every punchline hides something darker."
Co-produced with Starwipe Productions, Wisecrack is distributed by iHeartPodcasts.
